Speed Awareness Course 20MPH
TTC is supporting the trial and evaluation of a National 20 mph Speed Awareness scheme in Gwent & South Wales, North Wales and Avon & Somerset. The scheme aims to create safer environments for vulnerable road users and help reduce the speed at which people drive in 20 mph areas by encouraging drivers to alter their attitudes towards excessive or inappropriate speed.
This class-room based course consists of a 3 ¼ hour interactive presentation and discussion in a relaxed and informal atmosphere and covers all aspects of driving and in particular, speed control. There is no driving involved.
There are a limited number of Police forces who have adopted the National 20 mph Speed Awareness Scheme as part of a pilot evaluation. This scheme allows the Police to divert low-end speeding motorists to education as opposed to the Fixed Penalty System. Drivers who successfully complete the course after accepting an option of attending, do so as an alternative to the Fixed Penalty Scheme of a fine and penalty points endorsed on their licence.
Any driver who is detected driving at the speed identified as suitable in a 20 mph area and who has not previously attended a course within a 3 year period, will be offered a course in the area where the offence is committed or in an area where the NSAC20 pilot scheme has also been adopted.
